Women of Hope is a group of caring and compassionate individuals who desire to help educate, promote awareness, and provide hope for families currently coping with and dealing with the effects of breast cancer. Hope is the assurance that one day we will be able to live cancer free!

Women of Hope was founded in 2006 and is led by Maria Ashmore, a breast cancer survivor and 2007 Susan G. Komen “Local Hero” of Montgomery. The group consists of an Executive Board, Professional Board and Members-At-Large, who have all in some way been affected by breast cancer. Members of the Executive Board are dedicated to the daily operation of the organization as well as sharing life experiences with both adults and children of breast cancer families; while the Professional Board is dedicated to responding to specific medical and technical aspects of the breast cancer experience.

Our signature luncheon and fashion show is held each October, featuring a prominent breast cancer speaker from our community. Funds raised benefit the mission of Women of Hope to promote breast cancer awareness and education. This program is funded through the sale of tickets as well as community donations. Sponsorships are available for businesses to become a partner with Women of Hope each year. The goal of Women of Hope is to educate, promote awareness, and provide hope and encouragement for families coping with breast cancer.

WOMEN of HOPE breast cancer support groups help those people and their care givers in all stages of breast cancer. Our focus is on coping with diagnosis, treatment and enjoying life after cancer. Bring your family and friends to the monthly meetings and special programs at no charge. Learn from guest speakers who are doctors, nurses and cancer survivors. Come and meet people who have been cancer survivors for many years.

A noted researcher did a ten year study on the effect that participation in support groups like "WOMEN of HOPE" had on cancer patients:

• When compared to people who were not in groups, the people who participated in the support groups "showed significantly lower depression, fatigue, confusion and total mood disturbance as well as higher vigor."
  
  
• The study showed that support groups had a beneficial effect on length of life for cancer patients who participated.

Living Day to Day with Breast Cancer
 

You may have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. This is no doubt an emotionally difficult time. You are likely experiencing feelings of fear and uncertainty.

 It is important for you to understand breast cancer, and also to keep in mind that there are things you can do to help manage your cancer.

·    Share your feelings with family and friends.

·    Join a breast cancer support group.

·    Take time away from focusing on cancer each day by enjoying your favorite activities - unwind with a book, watch a movie, practice yoga.

·    Eat healthy meals and stay as physically active as you can.

·    Rest frequently.

·    Talk with your doctor about treatment options that are right for you.
